Marble buffing restores the shine of a floor that is already smooth but dull, and in Mallorca it costs between €6 and €10/m² as a standalone treatment, or €2-€4/m² added to a polishing job. It does not correct scratches, rings or unevenness: for that the floor has to be polished first, at a price of €10 to €25/m². In a normal home the shine lasts between 12 and 24 months. A dull marble floor is not always damaged. Very often it has simply lost its surface shine to the mop, to beach sand being dragged in and to years of the wrong products. That is where marble buffing in Mallorca solves the problem in a day and for a fraction of what a full polish costs. It is one of the treatments we are asked for most within our floor buffing in Mallorca, and it's also one of the services most often done incorrectly. Because almost no one explains the difference between polishing and buffing, and you end up paying for a treatment that wasn't right for you.

What is marble buffing and how does it differ from polishing?
Marble buffing is a surface treatment: using a machine, wool or felt pads and specific products, the shine of marble that is already smooth is brought back. It does not remove material. Polishing does: it takes off between 1 and 4 millimetres of stone with diamond pads and water until the surface is new, flat and free of marks.
To put it another way: polishing repairs, buffing makes it shine.
That's why order matters. If your marble has visible scratches or embedded flowerpot rings, buffing will only make the flaw shine more. You'll see it more, not less. We discuss this in detail in our guide on differences between polishing and buffing the floor, but the quick rule is this: if the damage is visible, you need to polish; if the damage is only suspected because the floor looks lifeless, buffing is enough.
How much does it cost to buff a marble floor in Mallorca?
Buffing a marble floor in Mallorca costs between €6 and €10/m² when booked as a standalone treatment, and between €2 and €4/m² extra when it follows straight on from a polish, because the machine and the team are already set up. For a 90 m² home that comes to between €540 and €900 if you only have it buffed.

What determines the price within the range is the actual condition, not the square footage. A marble floor in a villa that only a family walks on for two months a year is in the lower range. When is buffing enough for marble, and when does it need polishing first?
Buffing is enough when the marble still has a flat surface and has only lost its reflection. It has to be polished first when there are visible scratches, stains that have soaked in, open joints or differences in height between pieces. The home test is simple: wet a tile with water. If wetting it brings back the look you are after, buffing will work. If it still looks matt and marked, it will not.
There is a second sign we see a lot in Mallorca: marble that shines in the middle of the room and is dull in the hallways and in front of the sofa. That uneven wear cannot be fixed by buffing, because the material is no longer at the same level. It needs polishing.

Why can marble be crystallised but not vitrified?
Marble is a calcareous stone, and this limits what can be applied to it. Crystallisation works because the product reacts chemically with the calcium in the stone itself, forming a hard, microcrystalline layer that becomes part of the floor. Vitrification, on the other hand, is a layer of resin applied on top. On marble, it gives a plastic-like appearance and, even worse, seals in the moisture rising from the subfloor.
In Mallorca, that's not just theory. In ground floors and village houses with rising damp, vitrified marble ends up peeling and staining within a few months. The very Basic Document HS on Health and Hygiene of the Spanish Technical Building Code starts from the principle that rising damp from the ground must be dealt with in the substrate, not covered up in the finish. That is why, when someone asks us to vitrify marble, we say no and explain why.
- Buffing: mechanical surface gloss, with no chemical reaction. The gentlest of the three.
- Crystallisation: reaction with the calcium in marble. Greater hardness and longer lifespan.
- Vitrification: resin coating. Suitable for terrazzo and concrete; not recommended for marble.

How long does the shine of buffed marble last in a home in Mallorca?
In a private home, the shine of a buffed surface lasts between 12 and 24 months. In a building entrance or hotel lobby, it drops to 6-12 months, and in coastal areas with sand and salt spray, it can last as little as 6 months. The duration depends almost entirely on the abrasive material that enters the house from the street: beach sand is silica and scratches the marble every time someone walks on it.
Three things prolong the results longer than any miracle product:
- Long doormat at the entrance, the kind that actually traps sand.
- Mop only with pH-neutral soap, never with cleaners containing acid, vinegar or lemon.
- A maintenance buffing before the floor looks bad, not after.
That third point is the one that saves the most money. Maintenance done in time costs half as much as bringing back a floor that has already been left to go, as we explain in maintenance of marble floors in homes and residents' associations.
What is the marble buffing process we use?
- Technical visit: we identify the type of marble and measure the actual wear.
- Protection of skirting boards, joinery and furniture that cannot be moved.
- Thorough cleaning to remove old waxes and traces of incompatible products.
- Mechanical buffing with steel wool and buffing powder, using cross passes.
- Crystallisation in the high-traffic areas, if the floor calls for it.
- Vacuuming, corners gone over by hand and the floor ready to walk on the same day.
Step 3 is the one most often skipped and the one that causes the most problems. Marble with layers of wax accumulated over years doesn't shine: it stains. Removing that wax is part of the job, not an extra.
In which properties in Mallorca do we buff marble?
We work with marble all over the island, and each type of property has its own logic. In houses and villas the work is organised room by room so that the family can carry on using the house. In homeowners associations the limiting factor is the entrance hall and the staircase, which cannot be closed off completely: it is done in sections and to an agreed schedule. In hotels and tourist apartments the calendar rules, and that is why we concentrate this work at the change of season.

How much does it cost to buff a 100 m² marble floor in Mallorca?
Buffing 100 m² of marble in Mallorca costs between €600 and €1,000 if the floor is smooth and only needs its shine back. If it also has to be polished because there are scratches or rings, the quote rises to a range of €1,000 to €2,500. The difference is set by the condition of the floor, not the square metres, which is why we always assess it on site before giving a fixed price.
Can a scratched marble floor be buffed without polishing it first?
Not in any useful way. Buffing works on the existing surface, so if that surface is scratched, the shine will highlight the scratches rather than hide them. Fine mop scratches are corrected with a light single-pass polish; deep ones call for a full polish. Buffing a scratched marble floor is money thrown away, and it is the most common mistake we come across.
How long should you wait before walking on a freshly buffed marble floor?
Buffed marble can be walked on the same day, as soon as we finish vacuuming. There are no drying times as with vitrification, because no layer is applied that has to cure. It is worth waiting 24 to 48 hours before putting rugs and heavy furniture back, and not mopping the floor during the first week.
How often should the marble in a community entrance be buffed?
In a communal entrance hall in Palma the norm is a maintenance buffing every 6 to 12 months, depending on footfall and how close the building is to the sea. Seafront entrances, where sand comes in daily, tend towards the shorter interval. A building that keeps to that rhythm avoids having to polish the whole floor every few years, which is a far bigger outlay.
Does marble buffing leave the floor slippery?
Buffed marble gains shine but does not become dangerously slippery when dry. The risk arises when wet, which is why in areas such as bathrooms, terraces or pool access we recommend an anti-slip treatment instead of more shine. In spaces open to the public that decision is not an aesthetic one: the supporting document DA DB-SUA/3 on floor slipperiness sets mandatory classes from 1 to 3 depending on where the floor is laid, and a wet area open to the public does not go below class 2.
When NOT to buff a marble floor
- If the floor is scratched or uneven. First you polish; buffing beforehand is a waste of money.
- If there is unresolved rising damp. Treat the moisture first or the shine will last for weeks.
- If the marble is for outdoor use or in a humid area. What matters there is anti-slip, not shine, as we explain in anti-slip floor treatment in Mallorca.
- If you're going to renovate in less than a year. Leave the floor until the end of the works and you save yourself doing it twice.
